We, Seyka and Brian, are on a 21 country vegan voyage over 5 months to enjoy vegan food from all parts of our planet, connect the vegan community, spread the vegan mission, report plant based news, create ethical consumer guides, and have a blast while doing it. After a wonderful stay in Vietnam, we head towards our eleventh stop of this life-changing trip. Welcome to Vegan Voyage Cambodia, and thank you for joining us!
Some fun facts to start us off:
- You don’t drink the water or flush the toilet paper in Cambodia.
- You can get massages for $9 USD for 90 minutes and they are amazing.
- The people are incredibly kind.
- Cambodia is a hidden gem of a place and Siem Reap is a lovely place to visit.
Lodging
Baby Elephant Boutique Hotel
Baby Elephant is a lovely hotel. They have a gorgeous pool, restaurant and seating area, high rise patio for yoga and lounging, and wonderful energy. We were enamored by Baby Elephant. You can see our arrival in Cambodia and our room at Baby Elephant on our Instagram Story.
Baby Elephant is rated one of South East Asia’s Top 10 Best Sustainable Hotels. Their brand is Ethical Sustainable Creative.
BE, as it is affectionately called, is focused on sustainability, doing good in their community, and general goodness.
The hotel itself is incredibly lovely. They have a great vegan menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. The rooms are large, comfortable, beautifully decorated, and designed with sustainability in mind.
There is a budget option for Baby Elephant which will be branded BE Happy. Intended for budget travelers looking for something nicer than a hostel but at the same price. These are less luxurious rooms, right next door to Baby Elephant. But they still having full access to all of the goods, the BE pool, yoga classes, cooking classes, the restaurant and more. However, we bet you’ll want to be at the BE Happy restaurant instead as that will be a 100% vegan restaurant!
You can book tours and tuk-tuks through Baby Elephant to go on your temple tours to Angkor Wat, or on bike rides through the local villages.
If you’re living in Cambodia, Baby Elephant is a great spot for a meal. Their vegan menu is excellent so it’s a great place to stop even if you aren’t booked at the hotel.
White Rabbit Hostel
This Alice-in-Wonderland-themed hostel is all about having a good time. They have a full vegan menu and brand themselves as eco-friendly (love to see it). If you are looking for a super-social, alcohol-forward, party hostel, check out White Rabbit.
Other features of this hostel include a tattoo studio and bar crawls! And, get this, they have a party pool with a beer pong table!
If you want to get a sense of what they are all about, check out the link to their website. And get ready to have a wild time.
Restaurants
Banlle
A very elegant vegetarian restaurant. Locals love the vegan fish and chips, but we didn’t get to try. Please let me know if you go and try it!
We had the vegan set menu which was lovely! Here you can find a mix of western dishes and Cambodian cuisine.
Also, Banlle has a strong focus on sustainability.
Green Go
This is a completely vegan restaurant and co-working space in Cambodia. Wonderfully decorated with thoughtfully-designed food. Green Go contributes to other social causes and is well connected with the vegan community.
They serve mostly western dishes with some vegan Cambodian cuisine.
Isn’t it lovely?
Here’s a look inside thanks to their Facebook page.
Lily’s Secret Garden
Lily’s Secret Garden has a vegan menu that is worth trying! It is Cambodian and Asian fusion. Everything on the menu can be made vegetarian/vegan.
Vegan Voyage Cambodia Tours
Adventure Travel Co
We booked all of our tours through Adventure Travel Co and had a wonderful time. Our tour guide, Sai, was a charming young local man who has gone through extensive training and education to become an excellent guide. He shared stories about his life growing up in Siem Reap, details about the temples and towns we visited, and was incredibly sensitive to the needs of his customers – he could tell when one of us was tired or thirsty or too wet from the rain, and then made moves to take care of our needs.
Angkor Wat and other temples
One of the main attractions for Siem Reap is Angkor Wat. This epic temple is gorgeous and holds so much history. We were lucky enough to get a special tip: when everyone lines up at the pond to wait for sunrise over the temple, you go straight in by yourselves. This allowed us to take pictures alone in the temple before the crowd came rushing in! And we were done taking pictures by ourselves in enough time to go walk in with the big crowd!
Phare Circus
Like Cirque Du Solei but with a Cambodian twist. We purchased our tickets through Adventure Travel Co and really enjoyed this Circus!
Vegan Voyage Cambodia Perks
We had an awesome opportunity to make new friends! We met up with a lovely family, Lee, Rachel, Laurina, and Nicholas, who runs Epic Animal Quest – an organization that creates children’s books for underprivileged schools about animal connection and protection. Check out their website, books, and ways to get involved with their beautiful mission.
After Cambodia we went on to country number eight: Vegan Voyage Singapore
