Vegan Voyage Hong Kong and Macau
We are on a 21 country Vegan Voyage. We have already done Japan and Taiwan, and now here is your outline of a Vegan Voyage Hong Kong and Macau.

Culture Notes
This is a bustling, busy, professional city. We went during the beginning of the summer and it was very hot but people are still walking around in suits. It is still appropriate to wear dresses and shorts, but you stand out and look like a visitor not a local.
English is a national language in Hong Kong so it is generally easy to find people who speak English and can help.
Hong Kong is still a cash culture although many restaurants and shops do take credit card. You won’t be able to buy many things from small shops, transportation fare, and other odds and ends without cash.
Hong Kong is expensive and busy. This is a city that many people relate to New York City – tall buildings and people moving fast.
Hong Kong Restaurants
Kind Kitchen is part of the Green Common family in Hong Kong. They have vegan restaurants like Kind Kitchen, as well as vegetarian (almost completely vegan) stores where you can buy food for home.
Kind Kitchen has fun brands like Miyokos cheese, Beyond Burger, Impossible Burger, and Omni Pork. So if you already love those products, or you want to find out what all the hype is about, dive into Kind Kitchen!

This restaurant is on the second floor of a building in Hong Kong overlooking a street so you can people watch as you eat. The food is delicious and the ambiance is lovely. There are books to read, live music played beautifully by the owner herself, kind employees, and a feeling of being at home. Of course, the place is called “loving” hut. 😊 We had incredible food and I highly recommend getting an iced mocha because it tastes like a milkshake and is an amazing treat. Check out our video on Loving Hut to see what other food we got to experience.
There are Loving Huts all around the world. In fact, we have a Loving Hut across town from where we live in San Jose! These Loving Huts are a GREAT place to go when you are traveling: they are completely vegan and (in my experience) always filled with kind people.
The owner is a wonderful woman who you can see and get to know a little bit in our Loving Hut Hong Kong video!
This vegetarian café and store has vegan probiotic, cheese, tempeh, bulk health foods, gluten free options, baked goods, beauty products, workshops, community building, delicious spices, chocolate (you knew I was going to mention chocolate, right?), smoothies and so much more.
We went for a healthy lunch and to learn from the owner more about her shop. Check out our video (coming soon) to see the place in detail!
Chef James Oakley and his team have designed a creative and delicious vegan menu. We had a fabulous dinner at the Cordis hotel with fun flavors and were excited to see their menu that we didn’t try had additional vegan options that will wow people.
Video of our Alibi dinner and Chef James interview :
We had some yummy unique food here. The vegan options are not marked on the menu and not everyone speaks English so you might need to get creative with Google Translate to be safe with vegan options, but what we had was delicious.
Hong Kong Lodging
The Royal Garden Hotel had exceptional service, fun amenities and lovely rooms.
Hong Kong Activities
Hong Kong Greeters Vegan Tour (*A must do)
Hong Kong Greeters is run by a lovely woman, Amy, and lead by a Hong Kong local. We had William leading our tour and it was truly special. We started off with a temple tour, followed by a traditional Chinese lunch of dumplings and noodles.
Next we toured a beautiful public garden and got vegan ice cream. Then off to a short hike up to a vegan restaurant and small museum.
And we finished with a traditional Hong Kong dessert of sweet tofu!
This is an exceptional tour for a few reasons:
- The local tour guide gives wonderful information about cultural details and history that you don’t find elsewhere. They can answer your questions and help you get a true picture of the pace you’re visiting.
- Wonderful friends! The people you go on the tour with might not be as amazing as the ones we met up with, because ours were fabulous. But that was true for the other guests on our vegan tour in Japan as well, so I think there is a pattern here. Vegan tourists who are in for a fun vegan tour around a city seem to be the makings of great new friends.
- The food is so fun! And having a local with you makes it much easier to verify there truly is no animal products in any of it!
This was one of the most unique and wonderful yoga classes I’ve ever taken. The instructors wife told us that when she asked her husband what he would want to do if they won the lottery he said “teach yoga for free” and you can feel that when you take his class. We took a back-care class that was amazing. Highly recommend buying classes at Anahata.
A Day (or two) Trip to Macau
Macau is known as the Vegas of Asia. It is so similar in fact that is has many of the exact same hotels! You take a ferry both ways. If you upgrade to First Class tickets you are served free snacks (peanuts and crackers) and drinks (water, soda, beer) for about $5 USD additional for the ticket price. The ferry has wifi, and the views are beautiful. If you get seasick easily, consider taking a tummy tamer before getting on the ferry.
I recommend Macau for people who like fine dining, gambling, people watching, and fancy hotels. If that stuff doesn’t jazz you up, probably spend the time and money else where, like on hikes in Hong Kong or on Lantau Island if you’re flying in and out of there.
Our trip was short so we only visited a few places, we will highlight them for you here!
The Four Seasons is rolling out their new vegan-heavy Wellness Menu that is heavenly. Brian said their bean curd (tofu) tacos were the best tacos he’s ever had. The Impossible Burger was cooked to perfection. They have kombucha, fresh young coconuts, healthy salads full of flavor, and more. We highly recommend stopping by Four Seasons for a meal.
Video of Four Seasons (coming soon).
North has a large vegan menu that is flavorful and fun! Don’t miss stopping by North when visiting the Venetian.
Video coming soon!
If you are at the Venetian you can also grab a musical gondola ride and trot over to the Parisian to get a ride up the Eiffel tower to see the whole city from up above!
