Vegan Voyage Austria

Vienna Buildings

We, Seyka and Brian are on a 21 country vegan voyage over the world to enjoy vegan food from all parts of our planet, connect to the vegan community, spread the vegan mission, report plant based news, create ethical consumer guides and have a blast while doing it. After a gorgeous time spent in the beautiful land of Hungary, we now go on to our thirteenth stop. Will it be as lucky as the number says? Read on to find out in our Vegan Voyage Austria!

Vegan Voyage Austria: An Overview

In between the high energy of Hungary and Czech Republic, Vienna’s calm spirit came as a pleasant, relaxing surprise. Austria is lovely, and its capital full of history, romantic stores and streets and quiet restaurants.

How different is Vienna from what I know?

To get around Wien (the Austrian name of the city), we primarily walked and enjoyed the beautiful streets and shops. If you need a break from walking, you can also use electric scooters, bikes and public transportation. Getting away from the city is also fairly straightforward with daily car rentals and international rail. We took a train from Vienna to Prague and found it easy to find and use.

Don’t worry too much about technicalities: you can come as you are to the city. You can use credit card for nearly all transactions and dress as casually as you like. Just make sure you’re ready for the hot weather in the summer months!

Vegan Voyage Vienna: Accommodation Guide

Our first relaxing stop: Hotel Rathaus

Our time in Vienna was divided between two equally wonderful hotels! The first was the elegant Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design. Starting you off with a tip: to avoid awkward situations don’t confuse “Wein”, which means “wine”, with “Wien”, the name of the city! This place totally spoiled us from the moment we stepped into our gorgeous room, a large space conceived by the Scandinavian Design House. We got all the rest we needed there and loved doing our marriage workshop on their couch in between our outside adventures. These were all fueled by a wonderful vegan buffet breakfast. We were charmed by this hotel and would love to come back!

And now for the fun!

Although we said above that Vienna is an overall calm and relaxing place, we still had our mandatory dose of fun energy taken in at 25hours Hotel! They have a wild atmosphere throughout the rooms and even a rooftop bar with fun music and an incredible view over Vienna. They also had an awesome breakfast buffet with lots of vegan food and bottomless coffee, juices and even champagne for the over 21 crowd! Their vegan options during the rest of the day’s meals are unfortunately pretty much non-existent. We loved them, but we wouldn’t recommend staying there for lunch or dinner.

But don’t worry! To get the best vegan grub in the city, you can count on our recommendations.

Vegan Voyage Austria: The Food

Swing Kitchen

We know that sometimes promises that vegan food is good enough to fool a meat eater can be hugely disappointing. Even so, you can trust us when we say that Swing Kitchen and their amazing junk food can charm all the omnivores in your life. Order a burger and dine in or grab a wrap and go, but be sure to put their name on your Vegan Voyage Austria bucket list!

Uli’s Veganeria

Although we love a good vegan junk food spot, we’re just as delighted to come across some wholesome plantbased goodness in our travels. A definite highlight in Vienna is Uli’s Veganeria and its constantly rotating menu. This lovely spot is only open on weekdays for lunch and can get quite crowded, so if you walk by it and spot an empty table, jump on the opportunity! We were lucky enough to meet Uli herself. We heard all about what brought her to share her delicious cooking with the world. You can hear more about her journey in the video below!

Vegan Voyage Hungary: The Conclusion

Need to do some vegan shopping?

On top of eating out in the city, we also came across a lovely vegan and sustainable local shop called Muso Koroni. It’s always a pleasure to be able to shop for new vegan products at places that align with our values, and I always feel great when I use my purchases to contribute to the greater good. Either stop there for a quick browse or use their online store next time you’re looking for a fun new vegan product or gift.

We loved our time in Vienna and getting to shop, visit museums and discover lots of different food. Even just walking through the streets was exciting when we were surrounded by such beautiful buildings!
