Vegan Dog Food?! I Thought Dogs Are Carnivores?

We see commercials of a wolf transforming into a dog. While this imagery is cool, it doesn’t do justice to the remarkable evolution that dogs have gone through as they have lived beside humans. Dogs are now omnivores after evolving from their distant wolf ancestors alongside humans for thousands of years and dogs now possess a different genetic makeup (specifically, the AMY2B gene) which enables them to digest and thrive on starches.

Allergy Friendly

Plant based dog food is reported to be a nourishing, ethical, sustainable option for dogs, and more than that, balanced plant-based diets are great for dogs with chronic symptoms like itchy skin, digestive issues, joint pain, or eye discharge, since they contain easily-digestible ingredients and no common meat-based allergens.

  1. Thank you for this informative blog Seyka! I’m glad to see that V-Dog and other vegan dog food brands are getting some exposure. Most pet owners aren’t aware of the heavy cost that traditional pet food comes with – fully one quarter of the animals raised for meat are killed just for pet food. That’s horrible. As a dog-sitter for many years, I have cared for many dogs on a plant-based diet. While it may seem weird to some people, this food gives them all the nourishment they need to not just survive, but thrive. One dog in particular stands out in my memory. A lab named Zoey, found tied up in a yard in Redding and used as a “breeder.” She had been tied up in that yard for years, according to reports. She was very overweight. Her adoptive family put her on a vegan diet, and she has slimmed down and regained her energy and zest for life.

  2. This is a great article. I hear that you also have a recipe for some great vegan dog food that one can make at home; can you share that here please?
